Pay what you can for PYO herbs

Sliding scale — how-to

With the PYO program, we try to balance providing access to traditional medicines (a human right) with respect for our own costs and labor. Many people use the PYO program for many different purposes. We think that YOU are the best person to determine both what this program is worth to you and what you can afford. Use the rubric below to determine how much you want to pay on the sliding scale. And then sign-up here.

The sliding scale is a tool that can increase accessibility to goods/services, get us all into the practice of recognizing where we have and don't have privilege, and allow us to care for each other. We will never share what you pay with anyone else.

In the next 1-2 years, we are trying to expand our community resources to include a tool library, herbal processing space, composting toilet, shade structure/outdoor classroom, parking lot and more. These are expensive upgrades, and if you’d like to contribute to this effort, consider paying a little more to support!

How Much?

Consider how much you plan to harvest. If you'd like to harvest multiple pounds on a regular basis, consider paying between $250-$400.

(1 lb of fresh herbs looks like 1 gallon. Small amounts would be a pint-sized container, bunch, handful.)

How Often

Consider how often you plan to come and how much access to sustainably stewarded field and forest means to you. Ask how much you want to support the preservation of open land, wild habitat, women and queer farmers, and sustainable practices.

Purpose

Consider what you're harvesting for. If you are a mutual aid project that distributes medicines to people who wouldn’t otherwise have access, please pay the lowest amount. If you own a business and are planning to harvest for commercial products, consider paying on the higher end. If you make medicine for yourself, your family, and your community, aim for the middle ($150-$250).

Equity

If you are black or indigenous, we encourage you to pay on the lower end of the scale ($20-100). If you’re struggling to make ends meet, please pay below the mid-range ($50-$150). If you have access to financial resources and/or have more social privilege, ask if there's any additional amount you want to contribute to "pay-it-forward" to cover the costs of someone who might have less to contribute.

Gut Check

Stop and do a gut check. Do you feel any anxiety about the amount that you are choosing to pay. Why? Adjust the amount until you feel like you are in integrity and being honest with yourself about your capacity/boundaries/limitations. You’re welcome to set up a payment plan or to pay more as the season goes on.
